I Fart on You

I was in the Target the other day. There was some dumb kid just sitting in the middle of the register aisles. He was probably around 5 or 6. The kid was sitting there with his shoes off playing with some random thing. The mother was not paying attention or not caring that the kid was just sitting there blocking all of the aisle so people couldn't get past.

I was annoyed at both the mother and the kid. So because I was annoyed, I stepped very near the kid, pretended to look at candy and farted on him.

Unfortunately my flatulence isn't as hard core vomit inducing as it used to be. Quite honestly, the kid probably just said to himself, "Huh...it seems a slight bit warmer now". I didn't really attempt to gas the kid to death, but that small gesture definitely did lighten up my mood and didn't make me as angry as before farting on him.

Jew Bread

Man, those Jews sure know how to make tasty bread.

There are bagels. Tasty in the morning for breakfast, as pizza bagels, or just whenever for a snack.

We also recently got Challah. It is a subtly sweat bread that is ginormous. Not only that, but you can sing it to a popular Gwen Steffani song: "Hollaback Girl"...."I ain't no Challah back girl...I ain't no Challah back girl". Although in my rendition, I actually pronounce the C in Challah.

Nice Crafts do not Qualify as Expensive "Artwork"

Instead of going to NYC (due to assorted logistical issues and a variety of stuff we needed to get done at home), we decided to squeeze going to Boston in between some errand running. We went to the SOWA market in South Boston. It is an open air market that sells all sorts of crafts, antiques, produce, and artwork.

There were several sections where people sold "art". Most of these people are amateurs that would like to sell their product to semi-delusional-wannabe-art collectors. I do not consider a block of painted plywood with a picture attached to it under a pile a resin "artwork", nor do I consider it worth $40. Are you out of your fucking mind? I could do that for $3.50.

Then you have the people who are "photographers". First of all, the picture has to be rather extraordinary for me to shell out some money. On top of that, my opinion of the value of a photo in which somebody goes around the neighborhood or nature to be considerably lower than a painting, or even a print. For one, any nitwit with a digital camera and photoshop can take a decent picture. Secondly, you take one picture, and now you can reprint that a bazillion times for relatively nothing and still charge $50 for that picture in a crappy frame. At least with paintings, that requires a significant amount more of talent and time. ...but that doesn't mean any jackass that throws a few blotches of paint on a canvas should be paid $750 for their painting. Something that looks "cool" does not really make me wanna spend money on it.

I enjoyed looking at the crafts, artwork, and photos, but I scoffed at the ludicrous prices these people wanted to charge. On top of that you get these numb nut shit heads that think this is so extraordinary and so avant-garde. Meanwhile these ass wipes are completely unaware of their surroundings and inconsiderate to other people. They talk all high and mighty, and in the end they are just a bunch of dopes hanging out at an over priced amateur art sale trying to convey a sense of intelligence and creative knowledge. If there were so many of these shitheads I probably would have enjoyed it a lot more.

Star Trek Strategy

So the new Star Trek movie came out.  It is a long established franchise at Paramount that has sorta dwindled away.  I am sure with this crappy economy and the horrible state of movies, Paramount was grasping at anything they could to make some money, so they decided to go the Star Trek route.

But, they treated it very differently than before.  They ditched Braga and Berman, and went with a new creative team.  They went back to the old Kirk and Spock days, but they put a twist on it.  They brought in a rock-star director, JJ Abrams and they brought in actors that would appeal to a younger group: John Cho from Harold and Kumar fame, Zach Quinto from Hero's, Simon Pegg from Shaun of the Read and Run Fatboy Run...

On top of that, MTV is really pushing Star Trek to their younger non-typical Star Trek demographic.  MTV...why?  Because MTV and Paramount are owned by the same parent company.

They also did a brilliant move by bring the original Spock into the past and thus changing the timeline.  Now the writers can have almost complete creative freedom to do what they want and not have to fit into Star Trek The Original Series.

I really enjoyed the movie for a number of reasons: they made the ship look more real with a gritty engineering section, the story and cinematography was treated like a real movie and not some cookie cutter Star Trek movie, and they didn't take any huge names and try to prop the movie on their shoulders.

For once Hollywood did a decent job with a big Hollywood movie.

Pirates

I don't understand this whole pirate situation. You have a bunch of terrorist thugs that are robbing civilian ships. You also have multiple navies of multiple nations that are completely ineffective at deterring these assholes.

Now this most recent pirate story in the news has a handful of pirates that are holding an American citizen captive. They are asking for a couple of million dollars in exchange. I thought the US government doesn't negotiate with terrorists. Why are these people not dead? Why are other Somali pirates possibly going out to reinforce and help the first batch? If additional pirates approach this boat, I would have our navy blow them up.

What really pisses me off is these nitwits are even attempting to bargain with the American government. In my mind, once these asshole found out it was an American ship with American citizens, they all should have jumped ship and abandoned all possible hope of extracting money from anybody. Instead these dumb dumbs are staring down the American Navy with insolence.

Just a quick check in

Been wanting to write about an assortment of stuff, but I have been so busy.  During tax season, I also ditch "extra-curricular" activities, since I get pseudo paranoid about doing my taxes.

So this isn't a weekend rundown, but here are some highlights of the day.  (I stopped the weekend rundowns b/c it took up too much time and I would always have to rack my brain to figure out what I did.  It was just too much an annoyance).

So today I did up a whole bunch of my taxes.  I think I am fairly done with them, I just have to do the final number crunch and review.  I also fixed my backup library.  The tape drive dropped a leader, so I had to fix that.  Unfortunately the leader broke in late February, and I found out about it in late March.  Needless to say my backup scripts are not that robust.  So I mucked around with the tape drive and library, then powered the sucker up.  Apparently the library was having a hell of a time finding all the tapes in the library.  It was only seeing 3 out of the 8 tapes.  FUCK!

You know what, fuck that, I am done with tape, at least for now.  I decided to modify my backup scripts to point to a folder on another hard drive.  The beauty of tar is it will go to tape or to a file in a standard filesystem.  I tested that and it takes 1/4 of the time to do the backup, including software compression.

I also cleared up a bunch of space on my fileserver.  It was getting too cluttered with crap.  Plus I was begininng to reach a capacity limit.  I can't wait until I can upgrade my storage in my server.

I also made a mid-day lunch for my woman.  Unfortunately she is contaged with some crazy hunta virus...either that or whatever my nieces had.

Hmmm...I also played a quick game of Rock Band.  I really have to get better at that.  I don't want to be terminally stuck on medium.  I would at least like to be able to play a bit on hard.

The office is also a bit cleaner.  I threw out a bunch of boxes that was cluttering the palce and straighten up a bit.

Oh yeah, I paid some stupid bills.  I hate bills.  If I didn't have any bills to pay and not mortgage, life would be so much more fun.

Well that is the conclusion of my Saturday evening ramblings.

My Brain Tricked Me

I was planning on coming to work somewhat early today.  For the past couple of weeks, I have been dragging ass and rolling in late (late for me is 9am-ish).  Apparently my brain did not want me to get up early today.

This morning I heard the alarm and hit the snooze button.  7 minutes later, the alarm goes off again and I hit the snooze button a second time.  10 minutes later it went off and I decided to get up.  Awesome, I will get to work around 8:15.  Fantastic!  Then all of the sudden I wake up. HUH?  I already woke up and got up AN HOUR AGO!  Why am I getting up now...again!?!?

I thought about it a little, and I think my brain played a trick on me.  Apparently when the alarm went off the first time, I turned it off instead of hitting snooze.  Then my brain concocted a dream to trick me into thinking I hit snooze a second time and then woke up later.

Damn my brain is a tricky bastard.  So instead of getting to work at 8:15, I got to work at 9:20-ish.

Does anybody still care about Jennifer Aniston?

So back like 5 to 10 years ago, Jennifer Aniston was one of the "hottest women" in Hollywood.  Everybody emulated her hair styles and wanted to be her.  She was married to one of the "hottest men" in Hollywood, Brad Pitt.

Now she is no longer on a hit TV show.  She has transitioned to movies, and quite honestly I don't really think her career is as big as when she was on Friends.  She is 40, not very much in the public eye, and I really don't think people give a rats ass about her.  She is no longer married to Brad Pitt.  Instead she has dated several people in show-biz, and has denied every one of them.  It is a really lame and feeble bit that she does on all the talk shows and in an assortment of interviews to drum up interest in her.

Although many consider her to be "hot", I just think she is this dull, sex-less, uninteresting wind bag that really can't shed the horrible acting skills of "Rachel".  Her movies are either awful, or her roles in them have no value add.  Personally, I believe her career is waning, and so is her popularity.  Because she is so uninteresting and such a bore, she has to come up with some excitement or publicity around her to boast her mundane career.

The only thing that was remotely interesting about her was her marriage to Brad Pitt.  Brad is now married to Angelina Jolie, so she really can't talk about her marriage to Brad Pitt.  So the only thing left to talk about is how angry she is at Angelina for "stealing" Brad Pitt from her.

You know what, maybe if you weren't so uptight you might be more interesting and people wouldn't be so bored by you.  So stop talking about ancient history, since your own life is so uninteresting, to boost your dreadful career and your untalented ass.

Shoe Thrower Gets Three Years

I read that article and I laughed.  What an asshole.  He threw his shoe at our President and for that he will get prison raped for three years.  You deserve it you dumb ass.

I am sure there are a number of people that think that is overkill, or that he was justified in attacking President Bush, but I see it a different way.  Whether you liked Bush or not, at the time, he was the President of the United States.  To do something like that to a sitting president, is, in my opinion, an insult to the country and all her citizens.  So yeah, I was really mad at the guy and the situation.  I was also really peeved that the guy had a chance to throw a second show and that the Secret Service didn't shoot the guy...well maybe shooting is too much, but they should have tackled the guy a lot faster.

This nitwit also said it was for all the people that died as a result of the Iraqi war.  So you know the irony of this is if we didn't over throw Hussein (and some argue that we shouldn't have been there in the first place, and there is some merit to that argument), had you done that in his regime, you would have been executed in the must painful and excruciating of ways.  All these assholes that hate us because we are an "occupying force"...you wouldn't even be able to publicly express that sentiment under the Hussein regime.

So maybe you should be a little grateful that someone had the balls to liberate you, instead of you just complacently living under a crazy dictatorship.

Shorts and a Long Sleeve

Damn!  It is early March and the weather is warm enough that I can wear a pair of shorts and long sleeve T-shirt out.  So much for spring snowboarding.  The local mountain I go to lost about 4-6 inches off its base from just yesterday's 50 degree weather.  It is supposed to snow several inches tonight and into tomorrow, so I may wanna hit up a run or five with my new board in the next few days.  I may just have to go north to really test out my board.

A Brief Blurb about Politics and the Economy

I have been sporadically watching the political scene, especially as it is developing around the economy.  I will say I was not an Obama fan or supporter in this past election.  But regardless, I am a supporter of him because he is my President.  A President of a country in excruciating times.  I hope for the best, but the more I hear about what Washington is doing about the economy, the more I get concerned.

Obama sold him self as a man in favor of bi-partisan support.  He may honestly believe that, but it certainly is not happening.  One can say, "Oh well, that is Congress.  The folks in Congress are bitter towards each other and they are trying to jockey for position"  That may be true, but this is Obama's legislature, and he needs to get control of it.  The stimulus package passed very close to party lines.  There goes bi-partisan support.  It also passed very quickly--almost $800 Billion.

Wow, that is a staggering number.  I recall when last year's stimulus package was going through congress. Congress warned that this has to be done carefully.  One of the reasons was because if we get this wrong, we don't have any more money to pass another one.  So how did we pass this recent one then?  On top of that, it went through very quickly, with relatively little debate and committee work.

This frightens me.  When both the Executive and Legislative branch are run by the same party, that parties' will can be imposed on the opposing party and the country with little opposition and effort.  There is a reason why "checks and balances" are so important.  And because of this imbalance of power, the check is probably going to be ineffective.

This country's government is spending a lot of money to try and get itself out of this recession.  I fear the one way out of this debt is to tax the country.  Maybe it won't be a straight forward income tax increase, maybe it wouldn't be a luxury tax increase on the rich, but we probably will get taxed somehow.  Private companies may get taxed to bear the burden of this stimulus.  In turn they may have to lay people off or pass the financial burden on its customers, aka us.  I also worry that the government is growing so large.  I worry that these uber-spending bills are touted with such urgency that they "must get passed" and in turn provision that shouldn't belong there will sneak in.

I hope that this works out.  But if it doesn't, I fear the only thing we will be able to do is voice our opinion in the next election....but that may be too late.

I'm Not Dead...

I took a long unannounced, unintended hiatus from blogging..although I was still reading.  I have had a lot of things to say, or at least previously a lot of things to think.  I kept saying to myself that I should post, but laziness and a couple of personal things got in the way.  Right now I am sweaty after a run on the treadmill.  Maybe after I shower, I will post.

Shitty CEO's getting Bailed out by Us

I would say a good majority of the CEO's for large corporations in this country believe in capitalism and deregulation.  They probably think if it wasn't for all those pesky laws and the feds that they could crush the competition and take over their respective industries.  Well  now many of those CEO's have realized that the direction they put their company in is complete crap.  So they are begging the government to be bailed out by the tax dollars of the consumers they are so eager to screw out of every penny they can get.

I understand that if these companies collapse, the economy will take a nose dive...at least for the short term.  I understand many people in those companies and companies that supply them will lose their jobs.  But this is America.  It is a place where you can take an opportunity and make dreams come true.  What is to say that some entrepreneuring individual won't take the ashes of the old guard and create a new stronger company.

I think these greedy talentless CEOs should be shamed and dishonored.  They took what was once a great company and drove it into the ground with their old and insightless ways.  They should never be given exorbitant salaries or run any company ever again.  Quite honestly, they should be required to pay back the share holders they so dearly screwed over.

One might say well if the big three go under, the foreigners will take over.  Well the foreign car companies actually hire American workers to build cars to sell to Americans.  And it isn't just manufacturing, the Japanese and European car makers have plenty of "white collar" American staff.  So big deal the companies are foreign.  They build superior cars for cheaper and use American labor to build it.

Capitalism and deregulation is great when your company is on top, but when you fuck up big time, bring in the socialism!

VMWare Fusion and Hid Devices

This is total geek talk, but whatever.  I have been doing some programming on my Mac.  In actuality, I am programming on Linux in a virtual machine in Mac.  I am writing some application code to talk over USB HID, but I have been having mixed success at talking HID to my target device.  I was recently trolling around on the internet and found a tip at getting VMWare to properly virtualize a HID device to the guest operating system.

Some guy apparently got his HID device recognized in the guest OS by adding this to his vmx file for VMWare Workstation 6:

uhci.syncWriteback = "TRUE"
usb.generic.skipsetconfig = "TRUE"

Since the Mac uses Intel chipsets, I believe the USB driver is an ehci driver.  So I just change it to this:

ehci.syncWriteback = "TRUE"
usb.generic.skipsetconfig = "TRUE"

...and now it works!  WOOHOO!
